MENTAWAI SURF TAX

In 2016 the local authorities of Mentawai (Mentawai Surf Tax) created an additional tax for surfers. The Surf Tax must be paid on arrival to Siberut Harbor. The compulsory tax of two million Indonesian Rupiah (in cash) is for a duration of 15 days, but it’s extendable, in case you want to stay longer.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE MENTAWAI ISLANDS

The Mentawai Islands are different to other surf destinations like Bali or Lombok. We are still living remote, so there isn’t any surf shop around. We recommend to bring enough surf wax, sun screen, extra leash and extra fins, if applicable. There is a ding repair close by so no worries, in case, you may scratch your board a little bit.
The Mentawais are still more untouched than other surf destinations. That means there are a lot of still living reef breaks that can slow down the healing process of a wound. We recommend bringing some wound care supplies, band-aid and other things in case you will have a scratch from the reef or other injuries. Furthermore, standard pain-killers and medication against nausea or diarrhea is recommended.

ELECTRICITY

Since we are located on a small remote island. There isn’t a general supply of either running water or electricity. The electricity is produced by diesel engines. Water is pumped in big tanks from a well. Since we love our environment, we try to keep down the running time of our engines and the use of water. This means the electricity will run starting from 6:30 pm to 6 am. But no worries during the day we are producing electricity by solar panels so you can charge your devices like phone, camera or laptop.
All our power plugs are 220 V standard, plug type of 2-pin, similar to European countries. So, depending on where you are from, you may need a converter to a 2-pin head.
