FAQ
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR MENTAWAI SURF TRIP
Planning your trip? Here you’ll find answers to the questions we hear most, from the best time to surf and what’s included to how to get to the camp.
SURFING & SEASON
Are the Mentawais suitable for beginners or intermediates?
Our camp is not suitable for people who want to start surfing. All the waves around us are reef breaks, so we recommend a few basics before you come: good paddling strength, confidence in shoulder to head-high waves, and the ability to pop up and surf down the line, both left and right.
If you’re an upper beginner to intermediate surfer, we’re happy to help you improve with surf lessons in the water. Just let us know your level when you get in touch, and we’ll find the right spot for you. Surf lessons are available on request, extra charges may apply.
When is the best time to surf the Mentawais?
Depending what are you looking for the best months to score your dream waves (bigger swells) are May to September. May and June is the best time to score right handers, whereas August and September is better for the left handers. But also months like February to April and October to November are really good months to find the perfect wave. Waves like Burgerworld, McDonalds are surferable then. Best months for longboarders are in February to March and then mid October through December
How many people surf at the same spot?
It depends on the swell. When it’s bigger, many spots work and the lineup can be empty. With smaller swell, fewer spots break and you may share the waves with a few other surfers. We always choose the best option for the day.
Can I surf alone, or do I need a guide?
You’ll never have to figure it out on your own: we guide every trip. We choose the spot that fits the conditions of the day and introduce you to it before you paddle out, so you know where to sit, where the waves break and what to look out for.
What can I expect staying in the Mentawai Islands?
The Mentawai Islands are more remote than other parts of Indonesia, and everything has to be brought in by boat. The nature is stunning, the beaches are pristine and the waves are perfect, but the weather can be rough at times. Don’t expect supermarkets or shops: surf supplies, sunscreen and other essentials need to be brought from home or bought in Padang. We only receive supplies from the mainland once a week, so groceries have to be organized in advance. Please let us know about special dietary needs at least 3 weeks before your arrival.
What surf spots are close to the camp?
Our closest spots are Eret/Dogreef and Shadow right, which we reach in less than 5 minutes. Other close spots are Hideaways, Beng Bengs and the E-Bay area, and all other spots are reachable in less than 40 minutes by boat. Like other camps in the Northern Mentawai Islands, we can only reach the surf by boat, but the included boat trips give you a bigger variety of spots depending on swell and wind direction.
Like many other camps and resorts in the Northern Mentawai Islands we can only access surf spots by boat. But included boat trips gives you a bigger variety to surf depending on swell and wind direction.
I am a beginner, can I learn to surf in the Mentawai Islands?
The Mentawai Islands have only reef breaks. The bottom is coral or rock, which is less forgiving than a beach break like in Bali. The best places to learn are Bali, Lombok and other destinations. If you’re already confident in shoulder to head-high waves, your pop-up is good and you can surf down the line, you’re good to go!
Can I rent surfboards in your camp?
We rent surfboards, but not the bigger boards that beginner and intermediate surfers usually ride. If you don’t have your own board, we recommend renting one in Padang from Padang Surf Shop. Budi has plenty of boards and prepares everything you need for the Mentawais, including leg rope, wax and fins. The standard price is currently 200,000 IDR per board per day.
Does the nightly rate include surf guiding?
Our nightly rate includes two boat trips per day to surf spots and surf guiding. What does surf guiding mean? We will help and explain the surf spot in case you need help, and we will surf with you. If you still need more help in the water, like positioning, video analysis and more, we can offer you surf lessons too (extra costs apply).
Do you offer photo & videos while surfing?
Yes, we take pictures or videos during your surf session (depending on spot and weather conditions). Every night we will check the footage. The packages can be purchased end of your stay. Price starts at 1,000,000 IDR per person.
Can I surf with a longboard in the Mentawai Islands?
Yes, the best months for longboarders are from February to April and October to November.
STAY & FOOD
Why are the Mentawai Islands more expensive than other destinations in Indonesia?
The Mentawai Islands are far from the Sumatran mainland, and our camp is more than an hour from the main “city” of Siberut, where the shops are. Everything has to be brought in by ferry and boat, and fuel and supplies are expensive.
Can I come as non-surfer to the Mentawai Islands?
Of course! We offer special Non-Surfer packages. While staying with us you can hop on the boat if we have space, go snorkeling, relax at the beach or go fishing.
What other activities do you offer besides surfing?
You can use our snorkel masks to explore the underwater world. Do you love fishing? So do we! Just ask us for a trip to go fishing or spearfishing. If you want a break from surfing, we can take you to nearby villages to meet the locals and learn about Mentawai culture, or you can join a day trip into the jungle with our family, where you collect your own food and cook it over a fire in the traditional way.
Why stay with us?
Looking for a special place you’ll never forget? You’re in the right place. We are a Mentawai-owned, family-run surf camp (made by surfers for surfers) on a small island in the Northern Mentawais, close to some of the best waves in the Mentawai Islands. We’re more than a guest house or a camp, we’re like family. With a maximum of 8 guests, you get more flexibility, fewer people in the lineup, and great waves just a few minutes away.
Is there WiFi and electricity?
Yes, WiFi via Starlink is included in your stay. Electricity is currently provided by diesel generators, and from 2027 our camp will run entirely on solar power, with electricity 24 hours a day.
What about vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free food?
Vegetarian and vegan guests are very welcome, and we also offer gluten-free options. We can't rule out cross-contamination, so please contact us before booking if you have any allergies or intolerances.
TRAVEL & BOOKING
Can I travel with my family?
Yes of course. We offer a bigger bungalow for up to 4 persons. Perfect for a small family. Parents can do turns on surfing. In case your family is bigger we can offer to book the entire camp privately.
What flights to take?
The airport in Padang is Minangkabau International Airport (PDG). All Indonesian airlines fly there, and we can recommend Citilink, Pelita Air and Garuda Indonesia. Domestic flights go via Jakarta, and there are direct international flights from Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia and SuperAir Jet) and Singapore (Scoot).
How do I get from Padang to the camp?
From Padang you can take Mentawai Connect, which brings you straight to the islands in about 3.5 to 4 hours, or the Mentawai Fast, which can take up to 7 hours to Siberut. Both run every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. From Siberut harbor it’s about another hour by boat to our camp. More travel information.
Set schedules or flexible arrival dates?
No, we don’t offer set schedules or fixed trips, except for special offers (posted on Instagram and Facebook). You can arrive every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with Mentawai Connect or Mentawai Fast. The minimum stay is 5 nights, but we recommend staying at least 7 to 10 nights.
What’s included, and what costs extra?
Your stay includes your bungalow, three meals a day, unlimited coffee, tea and water, one fresh coconut per day, WiFi, two boat trips daily with guiding, and pick-up and drop-off at Siberut harbor.
Extra costs are flights, the transfer from Padang to Siberut, the Mentawai Surf Tax, travel insurance, other drinks and additional coconuts. Surf lessons and the photo and video package are also available at an extra cost.
We’re happy to organize your complete journey from Padang airport to our camp on request. Just ask us for a package.
How far in advance should I book?
There’s no fixed rule, and we’re happy to hear from you whenever you decide to come. For logistical reasons, it helps if you book at least one week in advance, because we only buy our groceries once a week. In high season (May to August), we recommend booking earlier, as we only have space for 8 guests. Just get in touch with us!
